I think it’s arguable that the forefathers of our country were trying to get away from control, oppression and inequality. Any efforts to get ahead were crushed with taxes and an accumulation of wealth in the hands of a very few. There always seemed to be something put in place that stopped them from moving ahead.

The constitution of the United States of America has some purposeful language in it: The Preamble states “…to promote the general welfare…” “Welfare” is defined by the Miriam Webster dictionary as “the health, happiness, and fortunes of a person, or group…” It seems pretty straight forward that this definition is referring to the welfare of all the people.

The Declaration of Independence has some purposeful language in it as well: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Safety and Happiness.”

The Gettysburg Address has some additional and related language, such as,”…government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Spend some time and study the “National Monument to the Forefathers“. I think you’ll find it quite enlightening.
