The United States has a representative government. This form of government was appropriate when our country was formed due to the vast distances people would have to travel to vote on every issue under a democracy. In its current construct, problems arise with self-interest and the influence of special interest groups. Deals are made among representatives that may not be agreeable to the representative’s constituents.
With the advent of the internet and the ability to authenticate people, it is possible for the individual states to set rules that require the representatives to convey the democratic interest of their constituents. Accountability would be included in the set of rules as well as some form of termination for cause when bias arises.
