The general population are puppets on strings to our elected officials, as opposed to participants who make actionable decisions. Once elected, we are at the mercy of politicians’ decisions. There is a better way to propagate the will of the majority up to the federal level (see Democracy and Republic). There needs to be better accountability and consequences for elected officials.
